What if God were to tire of us?

What if God were to tire of us?
2011, Taiwan

God is such a jealous God on our behalf, but not in any negative way. He is solicitous for us, indescribably so, like a bridegroom for his bride. A man who has never lifted a hand in anger against anybody, would probably do so should his bride be threatened. God has given us everything He possibly could. He gave His Son. And who knows, He could possibly have shown His love for us and how much He was willing to sacrifice for us, in another way, but this was the way He chose. God always uses things in the natural world to explain the spiritual to us. His love is unconditional. He showers us with blessings. The God of the universe is concerned about us! He wants to talk to us, have a relationship with us, He wants us to know Him. He wants to share His innermost secrets with us. Imagine! It is like a man who concerns himself with the life of an ant! And it is astonishing that He is hurt when we evade or ignore Him, when we have time to approach Him, but find excuses not to. We make time for Him when it is convenient for us, we brazenly take what we want and then push Him aside. We say so readily to Him, "Please help me to do this or that for You and for Your glory" and by the next day all those good intentions and promises are forgotten. When reality hits, and we suspect that we would probably have to give up some of our comforts, time, money or what not, to spend time with Him, we go back on our word. And it breaks His heart. And no, He is not a God of vengeance every time you put a foot wrong, but He is God, a Father, a Friend with authority over us, Who desires intimate friendship and love from us. He wants us to sit quietly with Him (or cycle or play golf or strum the guitar), be alone with Him (thus conduct all these activities not with other people, but with Him) and listen, and converse and do. He will never force Himself on us, because He is a gentleman. Sometimes you know you deserve a clip around the ears but it does not happen - you instead come up against His love, and His eternal faithfulness. He always gives you another chance. He never gives up.

But beware the day when His grace runs out...how will that day be for the man who has grasped the extent of God's patience with him, yet has never committed to Him? How will it be for you or me on the day of judgment? Surely we who have so much access to knowledge of and about God, would be more harshly judged than those who have never known Him...

What if God should say, "I have become tired of your excuses, your empty promises. You say one thing and you do another and it breaks my heart. Rather that you say nothing, than that you make many promises and then do not keep them. I am tired of being last on your list. You spend time with friends on Skype, but do not take the same trouble to make contact with Me. You only know Me when it is convenient for you, and want a relationship with Me only on your terms. You come to Me only when you urgently need Me to do something for you, but you show no desire to get to know My heart. When you are among your friends who do not know Me, you are embarrassed about your friendship with Me and you do not correct their poor perceptions of Me. You exhaust Me with your attempts to work things out for yourself and that you even think that you can. You do not understand how I long for you to come to Me with your problems, your heartache, your questions, your confusion, your anger and your dreams. I am frustrated that you do not share your joys first with Me, that you misunderstand My heart, that you think I will only heap more burdens on you when you come to Me, that I will only scold you... Do you not understand? When all those who are heavily burdened and fatigued, come to Me, I will take their loads on Me and give them a burden of another sort, one that is light on the shoulder as they will be yoked with Me - and best of all, they will have My company, all the time, day and night. Never will you have to make an appointment to talk to Me as I will always be available. I will never ever leave your side (unless you ask Me to). You need never fear anything, never be anxious about anything and nothing will ever be impossible for you when I am by your side. You will be successful in everything you do together with Me, success of course bearing a different meaning then. There will be joy but also tribulations, for how else would you appreciate the journey? One thing is certain, with Me you will never die of boredom!

Do you not realize how hard I am trying to have a relationship with you? How deeply I love you?

What do I still have to do to get your attention?"

What if God should say these words? What if God should tire of us? When will we open our eyes to see and understand God's heart when we live our lives as if our Creator does not exist? When will we turn around and run to Him and grasp Him as if we will never let go? For there with God is the safest, loveliest and best place to be. And when we have found it, to go and tell others...
